Aatma Review – Bipasha Basu

One thing that strikes about ‘Aatma‘ (and actually stays largely consistent) is that it doesn’t rely upon clichés (for most of it’s times) to keep its narrative engaging. This means that props like doors, windows, bulbs, candles, elevators or more are done away with by director Suparn Verma. Good, because all of this and more has been done to death by dozens of horror movies in the past. After all, for how long can audience be expected to stay engaged with long drawn shots of a woman walking in the corridors and the furniture in the house conspiring to scare all involved, whether those behind or on the scene.
This means that while the stage is set in the first 10 minutes of the movie itself (thankfully there are no tangents thrown here and there for character establishment), you known that as a single mother (Bipasha Basu) who has just survived an abusive relationship would see her husband (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) return from the dead as an ‘aatma’. With the promos pretty much making it quite clear that he wants his daughter (Doyel Dhawan) back into a ‘doosri dunia’, you are sure that Bipasha won’t allow that to happen. How she manages to succeed by doing something that only a mother can forms the film’s crux.

Aatma Review
This is where one does feel that with some more unexpected twists and turns in the film along with some major surprises in the offering, ‘Aatma’ could perhaps have gone to the next level and turned out to be a truly different experience. Reason being that with a psychological thriller aspect to it, ‘Aatma’ could well have traversed further boundaries and played around with the mind of a viewer. In this case though, the engagement is there but the kind of tension that could have played on a viewer’s mind is pretty limited. You are glued to the proceedings but heart stopping moments are far and few.
So while the beginning portions of the film do hint of ‘Bhoot Returns’ (which was again about a girl child who could see an ‘aatma’ with the mother – Manisha Koirala – terrified of what was happening to her), the film takes its own course after the interval point. Instead of the focus being on the girl being possessed, there are various tangents thrown in as well, most interestingly being Nawaz’s chilling presence that indeed makes you wonder what he would do next.
This can be evidenced in some of the very well written scenes that appear in first as well as second half of the film. (Spoilers ahead) Class teacher’s encounter in the rest room, scene in the kitchen where knives start flying around, a witch warning Bipasha about Nawaz’s return, the point where Doyel stands on the edge of the parapet, the horrifying moment where Bipasha’s friend is killed, Shernaz Patel’s (playing Bipasha’s mother) scene at the parking lot and most interestingly (and original too!), the culmination to Darshan Jariwala’s episode are all done well. Also, a special mention to the VFX which is seamless here!
However, and as mentioned earlier, it is the edge of the seat moments and most importantly, the scare quotient, is what one feels could have been a tad stronger. So while the film stays away from the clichés, which means loud background score and the elements generally associated with a ‘bhatakti aatma’ are out, one does feel that in an attempt to keep the film crisp and short, the kind of gradual tension build up at points could have made ‘Aatma’ an all the more engaging affair. Moreover, the film’s culmination, though interestingly thought through, is way too quick as well. An extended treatment could have helped.
The film does score on certain key points. First and foremost, Suparn brings to fore a tale that is told a tad differently. Secondly, he is supported by some good performances. Bipasha is the lifeline of the film and she plays her part very well, while conveying the pathos of a mother who would cover any distance to safeguard her daughter. Doyel is good and in an extended screen part, she forms a good connect with the audience. Nawaz has limited screen-time but his presence is thoroughly felt. He is particularly brilliant in the scene at the judge’s office. Jaideep Ahlawat as a cop does well in his part which has limited scope.
Overall, Suparn does well to bring a screenplay which can at least be termed as different. Of course some standard elements like a character possessed, presence of a medium, a cop on the hunt, a bunch of friends not quite willing to believe the ghostly tales, a series of characters meeting a chilling death and more are peppered into this crisp 90 minutes affair which, in it’s second half, has a lot more meat to offer. No pun intended. Also, to Suparn’s credit, he at least tries to project these scenes differently on screen, despite predictability hovering large.

Vidya Balan, Sridevi: Actresses who made a difference in 2012

Bollywood may be considered a male dominated industry by many, but 2012 saw Vidya Balan, Kareena Kapoor and Sridevi becoming the champions of change by carrying films on their more than able shoulders and establishing that actresses are more than just a glamour quotient with the success of their ventures.

Kahaani, featuring Vidya Balan, who had already challenged the male bastion with her 2011 big hit The Dirty Picture, was the first female-centric film of the year that hit the bull's eye.

Made on a shoestring budget of Rs.8 crore, Sujoy Ghosh-directed Kahaani revolved around seven-month pregnant Vidya Bagchi. High on suspense, thrill and drama, the film entertained audiences so much so that it became a gold spinner by raking in Rs.59.26 crore at the box-office.

Following the success of the film, Vidya Balan commented: "Women are taking centrestage in various walks of life all over the country and cinema is just a reflection of that. I'm happy to be part of the film that is celebrating the new role of women."

"Kahaani" was followed by the release of Karisma Kapoor's comeback film Dangerous Ishhq, in which she played a supermodel who undergoes past-life regression. The story spanned across 500 years. Though it fared averagely, Karisma's acting was appreciated.

Although few in number, women-centric films stood out among big-budget and big-starrer ones and forced everyone to sit up and take notice.

One of them was Bipasha Basu-starrer Raaz 3, which turned out to be a saving grace for the actress who has not given any substantial hits in recent times. She not only won critical acclaim for her portrayal of a successful actress struggling to keep up with the stardom but her film also became a hit with an earning of reportedly Rs.70 crore.

The success of "Raaz 3" was followed by Kareena Kapoor-starrer Heroine. Made at Rs.32 crore, including marketing and promotion costs, it did good business and grossed Rs.44.25 crore.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh welcomed the change. "Making women-centric films was earlier considered a risky proposition. But actresses like Vidya, Kareena and Sridevi have turned out to be game-changers. Their films have not only done well at the domestic box-office, but also in overseas market. These actresses have brought in a new wave of change and it seems to be a positive trend."

It's a known fact that Sridevi used to have a magical presence on the big screen and her charm remained intact even when she returned after 15 years with English Vinglish.

Her portrayal of a non-English speaking housewife who decides to learn English to keep up with her children and husband in Gaurie Shinde's directorial debut struck an emotional connect with all and sundry.

Shinde said that her mother was the inspiration for this film. "Most people in India struggle with this language. It is the insecurity and insensitivity that I have shown in the film," she added.

Reportedly made at a budget of Rs.15 core, it earned Rs.45.78 crore worldwide in 10 days.

Some other noticeable women-centric films that came out were "Jalpari" and "Jism 2".

Historian S.M.M. Ausaja too feels that the "year has been really good in terms of women-centric films working at the box-office, whether it is Vidya Balan, Kareena Kapoor or Sridevi". She however adds: "I wouldn't say it will bring a new wave in the film industry."

"There was a time when in the 1930s actresses were shown in a bigger way on film posters than the actors. So times keep changing. Bollywood still remains male- dominated," he said.

But Vidya Balan said what is important is that new kinds of roles are being written for actresses and feels a lot has changed over the years. "New kinds of roles are being written for them and they get such a wide variety to play on screen. I'm glad that I am working in this era where different roles are being written for women. I credit the filmmakers for bringing in such a big change," Vidya said.

Katrina Kaif named ideal wife for Salman Khan in a survey

Katrina Kaif named ideal wife for Salman Khan in a survey

In an interesting survey on a matrimonial website, people from all over India got to choose the ideal life partner for Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. No surprises for guessing who she is.

Actress Katrina Kaif has topped the list of perfect matches for Bollywood's famous bachelor, and her former beau, Salman Khan, according to a survey by a matrimonial site.

The survey by shaadi.com covered 21,000 respondents, and 69.84 percent believed that Katrina Kaif, 28, would make an ideal wife for Salman Khan, 47.

Another interesting survey around the Dabangg star reveals that 62 percent of Indian men don't want the actor to get married at all while 60.37 percent women want him to settle down as soon as possible.

In the survey, several fans from the south would like to see Salman's Dabangg 2 co-star Sonakshi Sinha as his off-screen life partner too while north Indians won't mind seeing southern actress Asin as his better half in real life.

"Most individuals associate themselves with a celebrity at some point in their life. Through the poll, we wanted to understand how an icon's lifestyle influences people's views and choices during partner search," said Gourav Rakshit, chief operating officer, Shaadi.com.

Dabangg 2 Android App Review

Dabangg 2 Android App Review

The official app of Arbaaz Khan’s Dabangg 2 is out! While the iPhone/iPad app is expected to be out in the App Store soon, the makers have released the Android version in the Google Play Store.
The free-for-download app, downloaded pretty quickly (Size: 20MB) on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (the device we used for testing). The first time you open up the application, you’d need to register with your mobile no and email address. The app would then send a verification code via SMS.
Dabangg 2 Android app
Why the app is worth downloading..

  • The Android app has almost every detail that you need to know about Khan’s upcoming Christmas release — Cast and Crew complete with the actors biography and details about the character that he/she plays in the film. Videos, HD Wallpapers, behind the scenes footage, latest news, on the sets.. the app has got it all.
  • All the song promos that have been released so far are included. You’d need to be connected to the internet to watch the videos, as the app takes you to the built-in Youtube application.
  • The Dabangg 2 app also lets you find nearby theatres and book tickets online. Although currently it loads a blank page, tickets should be available as soon as the advance booking opens in theatres.
  • Best of all.. its FREE and given it’s small size even users with 2G speeds should be able to download it.
Negatives
  • Music not included: Recently, quite a few movie apps released with the entire music album. Unfortunately, you can’t listen to full songs here.
  • The App only works in Portrait mode (Landscape mode is disabled). Also, the ‘back’ button on Android devices is only used to quit the application, so in-app navigation is a little difficult.
  • For a high-budget Bollywood film, that is expected to be one of the year’s biggest hits, it’s a pity that the makers have included Google ads at the bottom of every page.
Overall, it’s a must-download for Salman Khan fans. The app has got plenty of D2 content to keep you entertained. The only missing feature is the music album.
