Box office: 'Raanjhanaa' mints Rs. 5.15 crore on opening day

There is much for movie buffs to choose from at theatres this weekend. There’s the old-world romance of Raanjhanaa, the new-world adultery and blackmail of Shortcut Romeo, the cops-versus-criminals tussle of Enemmy and the Hollywood’s apocalyptic take in World War Z.

Of them all, Raanjhanaa has taken the lead. The film by director Aanand L Rai has got good reports by the critics.

The film has opened at the box office to a response that ranges between 40 percent to 60 percent. It’s doing particularly well in places like UP and Bihar. Even at multiplexes in Delhi and Mumbai the response has been good. The first-day collection of Raanjhanaa comes around at approximately Rs. 5.15 crore net.

The collection is expected to go up on Saturday and Sunday. The makers can expect the first weekend of the film to be between Rs. 17 crore and 20 crore net.

On the other hand, Shortcut Romeo, starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta, has opened very badly. The first-day collection of the film is said to be in the Rs. 25 lakh range, which is one of the lowest for a Bollywood film featuring popular names.

The third release Enemmy faces a virtual wipeout.

The last week’s release Fukrey is holding fort and is likely to emerge a hit soon.

The coming week would see the release of Ghanchakkar, starring Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan.

Box Office Collections – March 2013
  • Mar 1: The two major movies a week trend continues with the release of Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘The Attacks Of 26/11′ and John Abraham’s I Me Aur Main. Both open poorly and have little or no growth over the weekend. As expected, both movies ‘FLOP’ at the box office.

  • Mar 8: Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns and Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga released this week. While the former opened well the box office collecting a healthy Rs 3.25 crore net, the later was a non-starter. Bookmark this page for all Box Office updates.
  • Mar 15: Three releases this week – Jolly LLB, Mere Dad Ki Maruti and 3G. All three movies opened to a poor response on Friday morning. Jolly LLB though picked up and managed to put up good collections over the weekend. Mere Dad Ki Maruti too showed good growth in business. 3G was a disappointment, although it did decent business in smaller centres where sex and horror sells. Last week’s release Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns crashed in it’s second weekend. Kai Po Che steady at select cinemas. All eyes on Himmatwala now, which releases in theatres on March 29.
  • Mar 23: The trend of multiple releases continues. Aatma, Rangrez and Sona Spa released in theatres this weekend and all three opened to poor houses. Aatma was decent at mass-centres, Rangrez was poor, while Sona Spa is a washout. Last week’s release Jolly LLB was the first choice this weekend.
Box Office Collections – February 2013
  • Feb 1: The first two releases of February – David and Vishwaroop – opened to a poor response. David was a box office disaster, while the Hindi version of Vishwaroop (backed by Balaji) did well at the ticket window.
  • Feb 8: This week also witnessed two new releases – Akshay Kumar’s Special 26 and Prabhu Deva’s ABCD – Anybody Can Dance. The trade was in for a surprise as ABCD opened to a better response than Special 26. As the day progressed, Special 26 came into it’s own collecting 5.75 crore on it’s opening day. For a film without stars, ABCD did well to collect 4.25 crore. The word-of-mouth for Special 26 was good which helped the film cross the 60 crore mark. ABCD is likely to end it’s run with 40 crores net.
  • Feb 15: Valentine’s day weekend saw two more hindi movies hit screens – Murder 3 and Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story. The former, without Emraan Hashmi, was riding on brand value. The later was a box office disaster from it’s opening day.
  • Feb 22:  It looks like every week has two new releases this year as the much-delayed Zila Ghaziabad and Rock On!! director’s Kai Po Che released in cinemas. Zila did well on single screens in mass-centres, while Kai Po Che rocked the big-city multiplexes. KPC, based on Chetan Bhagat’s ‘The 3 Mistakes Of My Life’ is carrying fantastic word-of-mouth. It’s like to collect 45 crore+ at the domestic box office. The film, released by UTV Motion Pictures, was a surprise hit at the overseas box office too. The film has fared very well in US, UK and Australia.
Week 4 Box Office Collections – January 2013
  • Jan 25: Race 2 opened to a good response. The film proved to be the biggest hit of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone’s career. First major success of 2013.
Week 3 Box Office Collections – January 2013
  • Jan 18: Two releases this week – Inkaar and Mumbai Mirror, both opened to a poor response. Inkaar, with a bigger star cast, got a slightly better opening but the occupancy was less than 20% for noon shows. All eyes on Race 2 now!
  • Jan 18: Day 1 – Inkaar 1.5 crore (poor),  Mumbai Mirror 0.25 crore (disaster), Bandook 0.16 crore (washout).
Upcoming box office biggies: Race 2 (25th January), Special 26 (8th February), Murder 3 (15th February).
Week 2 Box Office Collections – January 2013
  • Jan 11: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: The makers spent a lot of money on marketing the film and released it on 1850 screens. But the box office opening on Friday was way below expectations. Thursday (Preview shows) + Friday – 6.5 crore.
  • Jan 12: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: Didn’t show enough growth, huge chunk of business was generated from premium multiplexes. Saturday: 6.65 crore.
  • Jan 13: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: Given the high costs, MKBKM looks almost certain to be Vishal Bhardwaj’s second failure in a row after Saat Khoon Maaf. The growth in business from Saturday was less than 10%. Sunday – 7.3 crore. First Weekend – 20.45 crore.
  • Jan 14: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: Managed to put up good numbers on Monday, as it was a holiday for ‘Makara Sankaranti’ in certain parts of the country.  Monday – 3.5 crore.
  • Jan 17: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: The film collected Rs 2.3 cr on Tuesday, Rs 2.05 cr on Wednesday and Rs 1.9 cr on Thursday. Week 1 Total – 30.2 crore
Notes: The trade had huge expectations from MKBKM as Imran Khan was enjoying a good run, Anushka Sharma has a strong fan following of her own and Vishal Bhardwaj films are known for it’s quality. Matru also looked promising from the trailers, music was a decent success too, but the opening day and first week collections were lower than Imran’s last clean-hit Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Last week’s release Table No 21 crashed at the box office.
Week 1 Box Office Collections – January 2013
  • Jan 6: Table No 21: Friday – 1.5 cr, Saturday – 2 cr, Sunday – 2.25 cr. First weekend – 5.75 crore.
  • Jan 10: Table No 21: Monday – 1 cr, Tuesday – 0.95 cr, Wednesday – 0.9 cr, Thursday – 0.9 cr. First week total – Rs 9.5 crore.
Notes: Table No 21 made on a budget of Rs 9 crores, with no major stars (Paresh Rawal, Rajeev Khandewal, Tena Desae) was the first release of 2013. The film took a slow start on it’s opening day, but managed a healthy total in it’s first weekend and continued it’s steady run over the weekdays. With competition in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, it remains to be seen if the film can sustain in theatres after it’s first week.
For major releases, this page will be updated everyday with domestic box office collections and links to articles on the website. For smaller films without major stars,  page will be updated once every 2-3 days.

Bollywood Sequels in 2013: Year of sequels!

‘Race 2′ has flagged off the sequel campaign. With the film marching towards the 100 crore mark, its success has proved once again that if the content is anything above average, a sequel would score well with the audience. No wonder, with six major sequels to arrive before end of year, Bollywood can well expect to rejoice with quite a few money spinners to add on to the fortunes.
[Note: 'Murder 3', 'Aashiqui 2' and 'Ragini MMS 2' haven't been included since these are franchise films and don't have anything common w.r.t. story, cast or director]
Krrish 3 - Dhoom 3
Krrish 3 – Dhoom 3
Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns [1st March 2013]
The sequel takes on from where the original left and while the tussle between Sahib (Jimmy Sheirgill) and Biwi (Mahie Gill) remains, it’s the entry of Irrfan Khan that adds on to the spice. Considering the fact that last year Tigmanshu Dhulia and the actor had created magic in ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, expect the lifetime collections of ‘Sahib Biwi aur Gangster’ (10 crores) to be surpassed by the sequel within it’s opening weekend itself.
Shootout at Wadala [1st May 2013]
One of the rare prequels to come out of Bollywood, ‘Shootout at Wadala’ arrives in the wake of ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ which was a commercial success. Though latter was directed by Approva Lakhia, it had Sanjay Gupta supervising the entire film. This time around, Gupta is making a huge comeback with the film and if the First Look is any indication, he has smashed it in a big way.
Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 [7th June 2013]
On its release two years back, ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ had turned out to be a surprise success of the year. On the flip side, none of the three Deols has enjoyed a commercial success in the couple of years gone by which means added push would be required to bring audience into theatres. However, the trio is clearly enjoying each other’s company whenever they are together and the sequel too is now expected to be a mad affair
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Again [8th August 2013]
This one is all set to be a major biggie on its arrival. The film has everything going in it’s favour currently. Akshay Kumar is at the peak of his career, Milan Luthria continues to prove his mettle as the director, Ekta Kapoor knows how to get her PR and Marketing machinery on full throttle while the release timing (Eid) is just perfect. Expect a sure shot 100 crore super success here.
Krrish 3 [Diwali 2013]
Hrithik Roshan, yet again, has taken a gamble of staying away from releasing any film for long and has invested all his time and energy into ‘Krrish 3′. While it is pretty much on the cards that the lifetime collections (120 crores) of his biggest grosser till date (Agneepath) could well be crossed in the opening week itself once it arrives on Diwali, it has to be seen that what kind of distance that the film eventually covers as one expects big numbers to be thrown with this one.
Dhoom 3 [Christmas 2013]
Now this is one movie which spells hot at the title stage itself. With Aamir Khan coming together with Katrina Kaifin this Aditya Chopra production, the film is all set to be massive. Product of a much liked franchise, it could well be telling a different story altogether though Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra still tie things together from the commonality factor perspective.

Table No. 21: 1st Wednesday Domestic Box Office Collections

It’s amazing to see Table No. 21 maintaining a steady pace at the Domestic Box Office. The movie’s actuals for Tuesday were 0.90 Crores. Come Wednesday and the movie showed a similar pattern making about 0.85 Crores. Table No. 21‘s domestic box office total post its 6 Days run is 8.75 Crores.

One cannot term these collections as fabulous numbers but considering the star cast and production cost of the movie, one can surely look upon it as respectable numbers. The real challenge will come up this week, with the release of Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma, and Pankaj Kapur starrer Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola.

Dabangg 2 box office collection exceed Rs 1.27 billion in India, Rs 385 m in abroad

It is another blockbuster for Sallu bhai. Dabangg 2 box office collection exceeds Rs 1.27 billion in India and Rs 385 million abroad
Made with a miniscule budge of just around Rs 50 crore, Salman Khan starrer Dabangg 2 has grossed a very impressive Rs 1.27 billion in the Indian market alone. This is the collection for the last ten days alone and there are reasons to be sure that the film is going to touch at least Rs 200 mark in the days to come as new year festivities continue and no other film from a similarly high rated film actor.
Salman Khan, right now is the highest rated film actor in the Indian film industry. He has millions of fans throughout the Hindi hinterland of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi besides other north Indian states. All of his films released in the last two years have been mammoth successes and there are enough signs that his reign at the top is going to continue for some more years to come. Youth in the Indian hinterland are his greatest fans and everyone of them wants to emulate his physique and style.

Meanwhile reports suggest that Sallu Bhai’s latest flick that was released in around 3500 screens within India and around 450 screens abroad is doing exceedingly well at the box office film that was produced by Sallu’s younger brother is among the most successful films of the year 2012 and its success will be felt in the year 2013 as well.
Reports suggest that Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha starrer film is doing as good in the second week as it did in the first week itself. A report says that Sallu’s movie that collected Rs 106.78 crores in the first week, has gone on to collect Rs 21 crore in the second weekend, taking its 10-day domestic total to Rs 127.78 crores. The movie is doing similarly well in markets abroad particularly in countries where Indians live in large number like UAE, UK, USA and Australia. The film has collected a cool Rs 38.49 crores in markets abroad

Biggest Grossers of the Year: 1989 – 2012

Bollywood churns out the maximum number of movies every year, but only one of them beats all others and becomes the biggest grosser of the year.

Salman Khan – SRK – Aamir Khan – Hrithik Roshan – Sunny Deol
Delivering the biggest grosser of the year also means your movie is watched by the maximum number of people in that particular year on the big screen. In this day and age, with prices of movie ticket soaring, piracy and various options for entertainment (like television), it’s tough to bring audiences to theatres.
Hence, topping the ‘biggest grosser list’ is nothing short of a major achievement. Below is a list of all major actors today and the count of the biggest grossers of the year to their credit. (Last 25 years only):

Salman KhanShahrukh KhanAamir KhanHrithik RoshanSunny Deol

1Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989)DDLJ (1995)Dil (1990)Kaho Na Pyaar Hai (2000)Border (1997)

5No Entry (2005)Om Shanti Om (2007)

6Dabangg (2010)

7Bodyguard (2011)

8Ek Tha Tiger (2012)

Some interesting unknown facts:
  • Salman Khan leads his contemporaries by a distance with a staggering count of 8 (9 if we include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai).
  • What makes it even more special for Salman is the fact that, he is the ONLY superstar with two biggest grossers of the decade. Maine Pyaar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hai Kaun were the biggest grossers of the 80s and 90s respectively.
  • Apart from the 5 biggest hits of the year to his credit, Shah Rukh Khan has given the 2nd biggest hit of the year for a record 8 times – Deewana (1991), Karan Arjun (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Mohabbatein (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), Main Hoon Na (2004) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008).
  • Salman has delivered Top 2 biggest grossers of the year three times. Hum Saath Saath Hain and Biwi No. 1 in 1999, Bodyguard and Ready in 2011, Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 in 2012 (expected).
  • Ajay Devgn has three 2nd biggest grosser of the year to his credit. Phool Aur Kaante in 1991, Pyaar to Hona hi Tha in 1998 and Golmaal 3 in 2010.
  • Akshay Kumar came close to giving the biggest hit of the year as many as 4 times. Mohra in 1994, Welcome in 2007 were the 2nd biggest hits while Singh is King and Rowdy Rathore came 3rd in 2008 and 2012 respectively.
  • 2006 belonged to Hrithik Roshan as Dhoom 2 and Krrish were the 1st and 2nd biggest hits of the year respectivel

Biggest Bollywood Flops – 2012

Even though 2012 was a year that didn’t really see any major flops, there were still a few films, both big as well as small, which had some notable names involved but still sunk without making much of a mark.
                                Players
Players‘Players’ was rejected, and how. Even though the film had suffered a poor weekend, there was still a faint hope of some revival at the least since the word of mouth wasn’t all that negative. However all such hopes were totally quashed as the weekdays hardly showed any improvement and saw a further slide in collections. Resultantly, the film pretty much folded shop after a terrible first week seeing merely 22 crore coming in. What further established the film’s poor run was the fact that the collections were a few lakhs lesser than Abhishek Bachchan’s last release ‘Dum Maaro Dum’.

Tezz Tezz
Writing was clear on the wall for ‘Tezz’ when it collected merely 11 crores in the opening weekend. If the he word of mouth was bad, Priyadarshan’s confession about the film being a sub-standard product didn’t help the cause either. The director claimed that he didn’t have any control over the film though the producer (Ratan Jain) felt that he did all that he could to safeguard this much delayed product. Ajay Devgn suffered yet another biggie debacle with Priyadarshan after ‘Aakrosh’, a pity because none of the two films were really bad if one looks at them as core commercial entertainers.

                                 Teri Meri Kahaani
Teri Meri Kahaani‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ turned out to be a huge flop, hence resulting in a step back for Shahid Kapoor who was really in look out for a long pending clean hit. After a poor start, this Kunal Kohli directed film could never recover. Audience feedback didn’t help the cause either as a result of which the film’s first week read a mere 23 crores. This was quite low for the film which came with the potential of crossing at least 50 crores at the box office. This also meant that Shahid now had a film of his collecting less than the likes of not just ‘Kaminey’ and ‘Mausam’ but even ‘Badmaash Company’.

                                Rush
Rush‘Rush’ took the poorest opening for an Emraan Hashmi film ever since he was hearlded with the superstar status. This much delayed film saw a sparse release for itself, didn’t quite get too many good shows for itself and was further marred by the fact that the end product was hardly impressive. The film folded up under the 4 crore mark which is less than half of what Emraan’s films earn on their opening day now! Ultimately ‘Rush’ went down as an affair that would be remembered more as a goodwill gesture by Emraan to have completed it than anything else.

Ekk Deewana ThaEkk Deewana Tha
‘Ekk Deewana Tha’ failed to take any substantial start at the box office. However an opening in the range of 10% was much lower than even the least occupancy one would have imagined for the film. Yes, the film didn’t have much going in its favour, whether it is the pull of the actors in the film, an overall promotional strategy or the lack of any buzz/hype before the release. Still, the disastrous opening must have been heart stopping for all involved. With barely 4 crores coming in, this was a second disappointment for director Gautham Menon in the world of Hindi films after ‘Rehnna Hai Terre Dil Main’.

Dabangg 100 Crores: Fastest to 100 crores?

Dabangg 100 Crores: Fastest to 100 crores?

Dabangg 2 has collected Rs 77 crore in 4 days at the box office (Fri 21 cr, Sat 19 cr, Sun 25 cr, Mon 12 cr).  The film has an outside chance of crossing the 100 crore mark on Christmas. But the big cricket match between India and Pakistan and extreme cold in North India, might affect the evening and night shows today.
It’s Salman Khan competing with himself at the top spot – as his last two releases were the fastest films to cross 100 crores. While Bodyguard took 7 days to join the 100 crore club, Ek Tha Tiger managed to do so in less than 6 days. The rest are not even close – 3 Idiots took 9 days, Ra One last year surpassed the 100 cr mark in 11 days.
The Ek Tha Tiger tiger record won’t be broken, but Dabangg 2 is likely to equal the record.

Dabangg 2 5 days total collection

Dabangg 2  5 days total collection

There is no stopping Salman Khan, as Dabangg 2 is on a record-breaking run at the Indian box office. Despite keenly awaited cricket matches and cold weather in North India, the film continues to put up good numbers.
If Dabangg 2 had to put up a big lifetime total, Christmas was always going to be crucial and the film has successfully passed the test! As per early estimates, the 5th day (Tuesday) collections are around 19-20 crores. At a few centres, the film managed to put up better numbers than Sunday!
The India Pakistan T20 match did affect collections, but overall the collections on Christmas was very good.
    Dabangg 2
  • Friday – 21 crore
  • Saturday – 19 crore
  • Sunday – 25 crore
  • Monday – 12 crore
  • Tuesday (Christmas) – 19-20 crore
  • 5 day total – 96-97 crores
Dabangg 2 will cross the 100 crore mark tomorrow (Wednesday). By the end of it’s second weekend, the film is likely to be the second biggest grosser of the year, going past the 135 cr figure of Rowdy Rathore.
For the second year in a row, Salman Khan will have the top two grossers of the year. In 2011, it was Bodyguard and Ready. In 2012, it will be Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2!

Most successful actors in Bollywood – Since 2000 (Analysis)

This article is an analysis of the success ratio of the films in which Top 6 stars (presently) of India have appeared in since 2000. Only the films where these actors had a ‘substantial’ role where accounted for. Cameos and extended guest appearances were cut out to rule the results from being unfairly skewed. A film is deemed to be ‘successful’ only when a film attains the ‘Hit’ status as a minimum prerogative. Average, above-average & semi-hit movies are not classified as successful movies as the only criteria for success of a Big Star’s movie is only when it earns a ‘Hit’ status for itself. Box office verdicts from BoxofficeIndia.com were used in this analysis because they are the only independent box-office tracking organisation in India without any prior allegiances to anyone in the industry. We are not judging the stardom of any of these actors and this article is only meant to give an indication of the profibility of the 6 most popular superstars over a fairly long period of time.

The actors have been analyzed alphabetically.
Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan - Success ratio is 54.5%.
  • Failures: Mela (flop), Dil Chahta Hai (only did ‘average’ business at the time), Mangal Pandey (below average), Dhobi Ghat (semi hit) and Talaash (semi hit). Total failures: 5.
  • Successes: Lagaan (hit), Fanaa (super hit), Rang De Basanti (hit), Taare Zameen Par (super hit), Ghajini (All time blockbuster) and 3 Idiots (All time blockbuster).Total successes: 6.
Aamir Khan has appeared in only 11 movies in these 13 years. Although he wasn’t the lead in Dhobi Ghat, it has still been considered, as he himself has said that Dhobi Ghat was his last film, when he was promoting Talaash (also, he was in the film from start to finish and had a consequential part to play). I started writing this article with the impression that Aamir Khan would have the highest success ratio but a Hit % of 54.5% is a surprise. An even bigger surprise is that he is not the First but the Second most successful of our 6 Superstars (as I said, I was expecting Aamir Khan to easily occupy the first position).
Ajay Devgan
Ajay Devgn: Success ratio is 14.8%
  • Failures: Deewane (flop), Raju Chacha (flop), Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke (flop), Tera Mera Saath Rahen (flop), Company (below average), Hum Kisise Kum Nahin (flop), The Legend of Bhagat Singh (flop), Deewaangee (below average), Bhoot (average), Qayamat (semi hit), Chori Chori (flop), Gangaajal (above average), Parwana (flop), Zameen (flop), Khakee (average), Yuva (flop), Raincoat (flop), Insan (flop), Blackmail (flop), Zameer (flop), Tango Charlie (flop), Kaal (above average), Main Aisa Hi Hoon (flop), Apaharan (above average), Shikhar (flop), Golmaal (semi hit), Omkara (flop), Cash (flop), Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag (flop), Halla Bol (flop), Sunday (below average), U Me Aur Hum (below average), Mehbooba (flop), All the Best (above average), London Dreams (flop), Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge (average), Aakrosh (flop), Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (below average), Rascals (flop), and Tezz (flop).
  • Successes: Golmaal Returns (hit), Raajneeti (blockbuster), Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (hit), Golmaal 3 (blockbuster), Singham (super hit), Bol Bachchan (hit), and Son of Sardaar (hit).
Total Failures: 40 - Total Successes: 7
The fact that Ajay Devgn is now considered a Superstar even after such a dismal Hit %, speaks volumes of the turnaround that has happened in his career in the last 2-3 years. He was always known as an ‘actor’ more than a ‘Superstar’ because of his reserved personality, but all that has changed now thanks to his career choices. Hopefully, his present mass appeal will change his Hit percentage in the future.
Akshay Kumar
Akshay Kumar: Success Ratio is 23.5%
  • Failures: Hera Pheri (average), Dhadkan (average), Khiladi 420 (flop), Ek Rishtaa (below average), Ajnabee (average), Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya (flop), Aankhen (average), Awara Paagal Deewana (above average), Talaash (flop), Khakee (average), Police Force: An Inside Story (flop), Aan (flop), Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin (flop), Hatya: The Murder (flop), Aitraaz (average), Ab Tumhare Hawale Waton Saathiyon (flop), Insan (flop), Bewafaa (below average), Waqt (above average), Garam Masala (semi hit), Deewana Huye Paagal (flop), Dosti: Friends Forever (below average), Mere Jeevan Saathi (flop), Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (flop), Jaan-E-Mann (flop), Tashan (below average), Chandni Chowk to China (flop), 8 X 10 Tasveer (flop), Kambakkht Ishq (above average), Blue (below average), De Dana Dan (above average), Khatta Meetha (below average), Action Replayy (flop), Tees Maar Khan (semi hit), Patiala House (below average), Thank You (average), Desi Boyz (below average), Joker (flop), and Khiladi 786 (average).
  • Successes: Andaaz (hit), Mujhse Shaadi Karoge (hit), Phir Hera Pheri (super hit), Bhagam Bhag (hit), Namastey London (hit), Heyy Babyy (hit), Bhool Bhulaiyaa (hit), Welcome (blockbuster), Singh Is Kinng (super hit), Housefull (hit), Housefull 2 (super hit), and Rowdy Rathore (super hit).
Total Failures: 39 - Total Successes: 12.
Akshay Kumar has appeared in 51 movies in the last 13 years (the most for any of the 6 Superstars). That’s an average of almost 4 movies a year. He is the only Superstar right now (other than Ajay Devgn) who puts his Superstardom on the line multiple times in a year. The initial part of the 2000s was not a fruitful time for Akshay, and now as we all know, 2007 was the year which changed it around for him. He gave 4 hits in one single year and earned legions of fans across the country. He has gone through ups and downs throughout his career, but thankfully for his fans, he hit the ups more than the downs in 2012.
Hrithik Roshan
Hrithik Roshan: Success Ratio is 38.8%
  • Failures: Fiza (flop), Mission Kashmir (semi hit), Yaadein (flop), Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage (flop), Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (flop), Mujhse Dosti Katroge (flop), Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (flop), Lakshya (below average), Jodhaa Akbar (semi hit), Kites (flop), and Guzaarish (flop).
  • Successes: Kaho Naa.. Pyaar Hai (blockbuster), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (blockbuster), Koi.. Mil Gaya (blockbuster), Krrish (blockbuster), Dhoom 2 (blockbuster), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (hit), and Agneepath (hit).
Total Failures: 11 - Total Successes: 7.
Hrithik Roshan burst on to the scene in 2000 with his debut film. He had a career slump after that, but occassional blockbusters in the form of Koi Mil Gaya, Dhoom 2 and Krrish kept his Superstar status alive. He is going through a career resurgence with two back-to-back Hits, and it remains to be seen what Krrish 3 brings for him and his fans. Regardless of the fate of Krrish 3, a success ratio of close to 40% is very decent for the youngest of our Superstars.
Salman Khan
Salman Khan: Success ratio is 30%
  • Failures: Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (above average), Chal Mere Bhai (average), Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega (flop), Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye (flop), Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (flop), Tumko Na Bhool Payenge (flop), Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (above average), Yeh Hai Jalwa (flop), Tere Naam (above average), Garv: Pride And Honour (below average), Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa (flop), Lucky: No Time for Love (below average), Main Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (semi hit), Kyon Ki (flop), Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar (flop), Jaan-E-Mann (flop), Marigold (flop), God Tussi Great Ho (flop), Yuvraaj (flop), London Dreams (flop), and Veer (below average).
  • Successes: Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (hit), No Entry (super hit), Partner (blockbuster), Wanted (super hit), Dabangg (all time blockbuster), Ready (blockbuster), Bodyguard (blockbuster), Ek Tha Tiger (blockbuster), and Dabangg 2 (guaranteed to be at least a Hit).
Total Failures: 21 – Total Successes 9
What can one possibly say about Salman Khan that hasn’t been said already? The fact that he is a phenomena right now is well known, but what’s neglected is that his career has hit the roof only after seeing very pathetic lows. Wanted changed Salman’s career around and he hasn’t delivered a flop since Veer, which released in early 2010. He has stuck to his favourite genre (masala) and coupled with his television appearances, his popularity has sky-rocketed. Still, nothing is certain and it is upto Salman to continue his recent success. A success percentage of 30% is a very poor reflection of his superstardom, but fortunately his movie choices have become a lot better than they were before – which provides a lot of hope for the next few years.
Shahrukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan: Success ratio 62.5%
  • Failures: Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (flop), Josh (above average), One 2 Ka 4 (flop), Asoka (flop), Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (above average), Chalte Chalte (semi hit), Swades (flop), Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke, and Paheli (flop).
  • Successes: Mohabbatein (super hit), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (Blockbuster), Devdas (hit), Kal Ho Naa Ho (hit), Main Hoon Na (hit), Veer Zaara (super hit), Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (hit), Don (hit), Chak De India (Blockbuster), Om Shanti Om (Blockbuster), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (Blockbuster), My Name Is Khan (hit), Ra.One (hit), Don 2 (hit), and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (hit).
Total Successes: 15 - Total Failures: 9
Even though SRK has appeared in as many as 24 films in the given time period, his success rate is the highest among all the Top 6 Superstars of the country. Some people can argue that some of his ‘hit’ were’t really hits, but that cannot be taken seriously as the trade considers the ‘hit’ movies to be successful. SRK’s consistency is even more amazing since his last failure was almost 8 years back in 2005. If he can deliver proper Hits even during the ‘bad’ phases of his career, then it remains to be seen what type of hits he will deliver when is enjoying a ‘good’ phase. And, as far as profitability is concerned, SRK takes the top spot quite convincingly.
Analysis:
5 of the Top 6 Superstars of the country have crossed 40 years of age and time is not on their side. 3 of the 6 Superstars – Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn are enjoying immense popularity recently, thanks to the remergence of the Masala genre. Their comebacks have made it a wide open game and now, any of the Top 6 actors can deliver massive hits on their day. The main reason producers invest money in movies is to make profits. If an actor has appeared in financially viable projects more than they have appeared in financially doomed projects, then the actor is considered to be successful. In this regard, Shahrukh Khan is the most successful of all the Superstars.
There’s been a change recently in the economics of Hindi films – thanks to the rise in money earned from satellite and other ancillary rights, the dependency on theatrical business has decreased and the risks (for producers) have come down rapidly. But at the end of the day, if your film is not theatrically successful, it is not a true success. Films have always been considered ‘hits’ only when they have done rip-roaring business theatrically. It doesn’t really matter how much money films earn from selling their satellite rights, as the trade always has, and always will consider a film successful if it has sold a bucketload of tickets.
The ranking of actors in terms of profibility (the higher the success %, the higher is the profibility):
  • 1. Shah Rukh Khan
  • 2. Aamir Khan
  • 3. Hrithik Roshan
  • 4. Salman Khan
  • 5. Akshay Kumar
  • 6. Ajay Devgn
The actors with the most number (not percentage) of hits (or better):
  • 1. Shah Rukh Khan (15)
  • 2. Akshay Kumar (12)
  • 3. Salman Khan (9)
  • 4. Hrithik Roshan (7)
  • = 4. Ajay Devgn (7)
  • 6. Aamir Khan (6)
The actors with the most number (not percentage) of failures:
  • 1. Ajay Devgn (40)
  • 2. Akshay Kumar (39)
  • 3. Salman Khan (21)
  • 4. Hrithik Roshan (11)
  • 5. Shah Rukh Khan (9)
  • 6. Aamir Khan (5)
Special Mention: Films in which these actors had small or inconsequential parts were not considered: Salaam-E-Ishq, Phir Milenge, Billu, Gaja Gamini, Luck By Chance, Jaani Dushman, Lajja, LOC Kargil, Taarzan: The Wonder Car are a few of the films not considered. Animated films where these actors were voiceover artists have not been considered as well (Toonpur Ka Superhero and Jumbo). Incidentally, even if these films were considered, the rankings of the actors would NOT change from their current positions.

P.S. A case can be made for the inclusion of Ranbir Kapoor in this list as he is considered to be the 7th Superstar or a mini-Superstar. His success percentage is 33% as he has appeared in 9 films till now and has given 3 Hits (Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani, Raajneeti and Barfi).

Dabangg 2 First day box office collection

Dabangg 2 First day box office collection

Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg2′had an excellent opening at the box office and its turned out be highest first day collection record on Non-holiday opening. At the single screens the movie had an extraordinary collections, hinting that the movie can easily set a new record for weekend.
Earlier,Non holiday opening record was held by Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore with collection of  15.1.But Dabangg2 has broken the record with good margin. It has collected nearly 21 .10 Crores on its first day.

However, this time Salman couldn’t break its record set during Ek Tha Tiger. Obviously that was impractical to break ETT’s record since Dabangg 2 was a non-holiday release unlike ETT which was released on the Indian Independence Day.
Dabangg 2 is likely to peak on Saturday night and put up record-breaking numbers on Sunday. The film will also benefit from the national holiday for Christmas on Tuesday.
