Box office: 'Raanjhanaa' mints Rs. 5.15 crore on opening day

There is much for movie buffs to choose from at theatres this weekend. There’s the old-world romance of Raanjhanaa, the new-world adultery and blackmail of Shortcut Romeo, the cops-versus-criminals tussle of Enemmy and the Hollywood’s apocalyptic take in World War Z.

Of them all, Raanjhanaa has taken the lead. The film by director Aanand L Rai has got good reports by the critics.

The film has opened at the box office to a response that ranges between 40 percent to 60 percent. It’s doing particularly well in places like UP and Bihar. Even at multiplexes in Delhi and Mumbai the response has been good. The first-day collection of Raanjhanaa comes around at approximately Rs. 5.15 crore net.

The collection is expected to go up on Saturday and Sunday. The makers can expect the first weekend of the film to be between Rs. 17 crore and 20 crore net.

On the other hand, Shortcut Romeo, starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta, has opened very badly. The first-day collection of the film is said to be in the Rs. 25 lakh range, which is one of the lowest for a Bollywood film featuring popular names.

The third release Enemmy faces a virtual wipeout.

The last week’s release Fukrey is holding fort and is likely to emerge a hit soon.

The coming week would see the release of Ghanchakkar, starring Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan.
